Wood Duck Box Maintenance at Shiawassee River State Game Area (Saginaw County)

01/25/2025 09:00 AM - 12:00 PM ET

Description

About the project: On Saturday, January 25, 2025, MUCC's On the Ground program will host a wood duck nesting box event in partnership with the Michigan DNR at Shiawassee River State Game Area in Saginaw County. Volunteers are needed on Saturday, January 25, 2025, from 9 A.M. - 12 P.M. The purpose of this project is to improve habitat for wood ducks by maintaining existing nest boxes and removing old material at the state game area.  We will also be cataloging each nest box using GPS coordinates.

Meeting location: Volunteers will meet at the waterfowl check station located at the DNR Field Office. Accessibility to the wood duck boxes may be challenging; four-wheel drive vehicles are recommended.

What to bring: Bring your work gloves if you have them and your enthusiasm for improving wildlife habitat! Closed-toed boots and long pants are recommended. Ice cleats are also recommended if you have them. This project will take place rain or shine unless there is severe weather so please dress accordingly. Be prepared to work outside in cold weather for a minimum of three hours. Any necessary equipment will be provided. We could use assistance with volunteers bringing pry bars and claw hammers. A volunteer lunch and free appreciation gift will also be provided to all registered volunteers. We recommend bringing a reusable water bottle to reduce waste but plastic water bottles will be available throughout the day.

Registration closes on January 24 at 4:00 PM. If you need to register or cancel after this date/time, please email MUCC's Habitat Program and Partnerships Coordinator Olivia Triltsch at otriltsch@mucc.org so the lunch order can be updated.
