Mast-producing Tree Planting in the Newberry Forest Management Unit

06/08/2024 10:00 AM - 02:00 PM ET

About the project: Join MUCC's On the Ground in partnership with the Michigan DNR Wildlife Division to plant mast-producing trees within the Newberry Forest Management Unit (Luce County). Volunteers are needed on Saturday, June 8, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. A mix of red oaks and apple trees will be planted and fenced in an effort to improve forage for wildlife including white-tailed deer and upland game birds. The Silver Creek Birding Trail runs along the project site for volunteers interested in checking it out after the planting.

Meeting location: Volunteers will meet at the DNR Customer Service Center in Newberry and caravan about 20 minutes north to the project site.

What to bring: Bring your enthusiasm for improving wildlife habitat! Lunch, a volunteer T-shirt and bug head nets will be provided to all registered volunteers. A refillable water bottle is recommended, but we will have plastic water bottles available for volunteers. All necessary equipment will be provided.

Registration for the event will close on Thursday, June 6, 2024, at 5 P.M. If you need to register after the close date, email so the lunch order can be updated.

Please contact MUCC's Habitat Program and Partnerships Coordinator Sarah Scheitz at with any questions regarding this event or the OTG program.
